Do you sometimes find yourself at a loss for what to write about? Those days are going to be a thing of the past because with our massive list of unique holidays, celebrations and month-long observances, you’ll have more than two years worth of topics to write about daily!
Sometimes, coming up with topics to write about is the hardest aspect of blogging. We all get a touch of writer’s block from time-to-time. When the writing blues strike, one thing I recommend is taking a look at the unique holidays and observances that happen in a given month. I mean, who doesn’t love National Doughnut Day?!
Crafting content around unique holidays is a great way to add evergreen content to your site. Wacky holidays, celebrations, and month-long observances generally happen every year (leap day excluded), so you’ll be able to refresh, republish, and reshare your content year after year.
Because these funny national days come around every year, I recommend writing posts that are as evergreen as possible so you can either republish or reshare them year after year after year. One super easy way to do this is to keep the year out of your post. For instance, just say that January 30 is croissant day, not January 30, 2018.
Some unique holidays you can have fun with on your blog and produce really creative content. Some days are more somber and may not fit all blogs. Whatever you do, don’t try to force something when it’s not a good fit just for the sake of new content.
Unique holidays and SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is incredibly important if you want your blog to rank in Google. With some solid keyword research, you might even find yourself ranking well in the search engines for some unique holidays and observances!
For instance, a quick look at my preferred SEO tool, Keysearch, shows that “Houseplant Appreciation Day” might be easy to rank for on Google! It may seem random, but if your blog is on the first page of search results for any of these unique holidays, some awesome traffic could head your way every time that holiday rolls around!
Some terms are going to be easier to rank for than others. For instance, Houseplant Appreciation Day is going to be 100x easier to rank for than Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sure, Breast Cancer Awareness Month probably has 100x as much traffic as Houseplant Appreciation Day (at least), but the competition is going to be incredibly fierce and hard to tackle.
Tip: The main keyword for most of these days is the actual name of the holiday/observance itself. This is what people are going to be Googling. Using a keyword research tool will help you find additional related words that you should pepper throughout your post.
By the way, if you’re really confused by the concept of SEO and how to make it work for your blog, check out my e-course, Introduction to SEO for Bloggers ($19.99).
Monetizing holiday and observance posts
Many holidays and celebrations can easily be written about in ways that can be monetized. For instance, on Bubble Bath Day you could write about the best bath bombs you’ve ever used or your favorite bath wash. You could share a DIY for a bath bomb, or you could write about the subscription box that sent you some amazing bath products. Heck, you could do a round-up of the best loofahs, or write about how loofahs are breeding grounds for mold and make some alternative body scrubbing suggestions. There are 100 ways you could approach writing about any holiday, so do a little bit of brainstorming to figure out what will work best for your site.
Affiliate links are a great way to monetize blog posts about unique holidays and/or many observances, but if you plan ahead, pitch your post ideas to advertisers to see if you can get sponsorships to write about these wacky holidays and/or receive free products to feature! When reaching out to potential sponsors, don’t forget to tell them what you can do for them. How will your post help promote them?
For some of the monthly observances listed below, I’ve shared some ideas for affiliate partners to help you get the juices flowing for other partnership ideas.
Update your post each year
Moving forward, each year you’ll need to update your post to make sure it’s still relevant and that all links work, and then either republish it or start sharing it on social media again about six weeks prior to the actual holiday.
January Month-Long Observances
Below are some of the topics that will be highlighted during the month of January.
National Bath Safety Month
This would be a great topic for mom/dad bloggers! Writing about tips for keeping children safe in the bath is practical AND easily monetizable!
National Hobby Month
Do you have a unique hobby? You get bonus points if you have a hobby that you can introduce to your readers with monetized content! For instance, if you knit, you would want to introduce your readers to the best yarn and knitting needles. If you’re a board game junkie, share some of your favorite board games and why they’re favorites in your house.
Hot Tea Month
Calling all tea lovers… January is your month! Share your favorite tea with your readers, or the best mugs, infusers, or teapots.
Affiliate partner ideas: If tea is what you want to write about, ShareaSale is the best affiliate network to check out. Just a sampling of the tea-centric merchants they work with includes Art of Tea, Simple Loose Leaf (a tea subscription service – which would be another great post idea as there are quite a few tea subscription boxes), Teabox (another subscription service), Teatulia, The Tea Spot, and so many more.
National Oatmeal Month
Who knew that oatmeal had its own month? Recipe bloggers could share a round-up of recipes they’ve written previously using oatmeal, or perhaps develop a new one. Beauty bloggers can share tips for using oatmeal in homemade beauty products.
National Soup Month
Sharing some favorite soup recipes is a must during National Soup Month, don’t you think? In addition, soup mugs, soup spoons, and other recipes that can be made using soup would be a big hit!
Additional month-long observances in January: National Blood Donor Month, National Braille Literacy Month, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, National Glaucoma Awareness Month, Thyroid Awareness Month, National Birth Defects Prevention Month

February Month-Long Observances
Below are some of the topics that will be highlighted during the month of February.
American Heart Month
While January is typically resolution and fitness month, writing about American Heart Month is a great way to educate your readers about heart disease and encourage them to pursue healthy lifestyles.
Black History Month
It’s hard for me to recommend monetizing such an important topic, but one way you could do that is to recommend books written by and about prominent African Americans. Or you could highlight businesses owned by African Americans.
Great American Pie Month
Calling all recipe creators – Great American Pie Month is calling your name! Share your favorite pie – or create a new one!
Affiliate partner ideas: You can easily promote the tools needed to make pies on your blog, like maybe pie plates and rolling pins from Macy’s or Sur La Table. You can also promote companies that will ship pies directly to people’s homes, which is perfect for the non-chefs among us! Harry & David ship pies, as does Collin Street Bakery and Dean & Deluca.

July Month-Long Observances
Below are some of the topics that will be highlighted during the month of July.
National Ice Cream Month
I don’t know how many angles you can take writing about ice cream, but hey, it’s ice cream! You can’t go wrong trying to find a way to highlight this sweet and icy treat on your blog.
Affiliate partner ideas: Believe it or not, there are actually a few companies you can partner with to monetize posts about ice cream! For instance, eCreamery is one of the largest online ice cream shops and they have an affiliate program with ShareaSale! Another option is partnering with WisconsinMade.com, who ship a couple of different ice cream brands. If you don’t want to write about shipping ice cream, another approach you could take is by writing about ice cream makers, which are readily available at stores like Target and Kohl’s.
National Picnic Month
Whether you write about what to wear to a picnic, what to take to a picnic, or the world’s best picnic basket, there are plenty of ways to write about (and monetize) National Picnic Month!
UV Safety Month
I’ve written about UV safety a few times, but never from the standpoint of UV Safety Month. I’m kind of a nut about sun safety! A few ways to write about this month include how to protect sensitive baby skin from harmful UV rays, the best moisturizers with UV protection, awesome sunscreens, or ways to protect your eyes from UV rays.

Whether you want to write about golf apparel, golf shirts, or golf vacations, this is your month to shine! My only question is why National Golf Month occurs toward the end of golf season?
Affiliate partner ideas: Some of the biggest golfing brands have affiliate programs, like Callaway Golf, Nike, and TaylorMade. You could recommend fun golf gift ideas, like Putter Pong, a golf-inspired tailgate game, or Swingshot, a camera that records and analyzes golf swings. Depending on your audience, you can promote a golf vacation at Sandals & Beaches Resorts.

September Month-Long Observances
Below are some of the topics that will be highlighted during the month of September.
Baby Safety Month
While you could approach Baby Safety Month from the standpoint of writing about everything baby safety-related, you could also break it down into smaller topics, like ways to keep crawling babies safe (something I’m personally dealing with now), baby sun safety, or keeping babies safe when they’re with babysitters.
Fall Hat Month
There are a lot of unique holidays each year, many of which I’d never heard of before composing this post, including Fall Hat Month. It seems a little strange but hats can definitely make for fun blog fodder!
Affiliate partner ideas: There’s really no shortage of stores that sell hats! Lids is a great choice if you’re looking for sports caps, as is Fanatics. Preston & Olivia has some gorgeous Instagram-worthy hats, as does Shopbop.

December Month-Long Observances
Below are some of the topics that will be highlighted during the month of December.
Write a Friend Month
There’s nothing I love more than snail mail, and December is apparently a great month to not only reach out to long lost friends, but it’s also a great month to encourage your readers to do so. Loosely interpreted, I would think that you could encourage your readers to “write a friend” by sending holiday cards (and recommending your favorite brands), or perhaps you could share stationery picks that would make great gifts.
Affiliate partner ideas: There are quite a few companies that sell both stationery and holiday cards, which will give you plenty of ideas for tackling Write a Friend Month. Some affiliate partner ideas include Minted, Zazzle, Paper Culture, and York Photo.
Safe Toys and Gifts Month
Chances are good that if you’re writing about toys and gifts in December, you’re not really looking for more content. There is more than enough to write about in December, but covering toys and gifts from the angle of “safety” is definitely a little different.
Additional month-long observances in December: Bingo Month, Stress-Free Family Holidays Month, Read a New Book Month, Learn a Foreign Language Month, AIDS Awareness Month
